We all know students who excel in academics, fine arts or volunteer service. Here's one local resident who's having an impact in Manchester.

MANCHESTER, NJ — Star Students are found in classrooms, on concert and theater stages and at debate lecterns, and out in the community doing good things to make life better for all of us.

Here at Patch, we've launched an initiative to help recognize Star Students, and we’re working to tell the stories of these outstanding kids to their neighbors.

This submission comes from JoAnn McCann, who nominated her granddaughter Callie, of Manchester.

Why do you believe the star local student should be recognized?

Callie is a senior in high school. Her academic achievement is excellent. She also earned the Girl Scouts Gold Award. Her canoe team took second place at the Clinton Canoe Regatta, a 10-mile race in New York State. She has been a four-year member of the Manchester Township High School Marching Band and field captain in flute and piccolo; she plays trombone in the Manchester Township High School Jazz Band. She is co-captain of the high school's girls bowling team, where she has been a member for four years.

She was a participant in the Paddle for the Bay, the Guinness World Record-setting Toms River canoe and kayak event.

Callie has received the Young Woman’s Service Award for community service from Soroptimist International of the Central Jersey Coast, and the Presidential Volunteer Service Award for community service from the Points of Light Foundation.

What's one thing you want everyone to know about the star local student?

Callie is a determined young woman who has faced challenges along to way to achieve her goals successfully.

Congratulations on your achievements, and all of our best wishes to you in the future, Callie!
