Lakehurst Residents Advised to Lock Car Doors Following Thefts

Thefts appear to be crimes of opportunity, police said

After reports of several stolen items from unlocked vehicles recently, Lakehurst police are advising residents to make sure they keep doors locked.

“The vehicles were entered during the night sometime between the hours of midnight and 2 a.m.,” police said in an alert message. “In each case that was reported the vehicle had been left unlocked by the owner.”

Residents are reminded to lock their vehicles anytime that they are left unattended. Most crimes are crimes of opportunity, police said, meaning most thieves will not bother with a locked vehicle and will continue on until they find one that is unlocked.

Police also ask that all residents to report suspicious vehicles, persons, or activity in your neighborhood by calling police dispatch at 732-657-7811. Anyone with information about the recent thefts is also asked to call.

“If you see someone breaking into vehicles, do not attempt to apprehend them, contact the police ASAP and provide as much detail about the person as possible,” the alert message reads.
