UPDATE: Monday Night Fire Leaves Whiting Home Uninhabitable

Single resident was outside of home before police arrived on scene

A Whiting mobile home is uninhabitable after a Monday night fire that may have been caused by an unattended cigar, police said.

Manchester Police responded 10 Teal Court in the Pine Ridge at Crestwood mobile home park after a caller dialed 911 to report a residential structure fire at about 10:30 p.m., said Capt. Lisa Parker.

Upon arrival, police and firefighters saw flames and heavy smoke coming from the residence. Raymond Mcgrath, 61, lives there alone and was outside before police arrived, according to Parker.

Mcgrath told authorities that he had lit his cigar in the living room before going into another room in the mobile home, which may have contributed to the fire, Parker said.

The Ocean County Fire Marshall, Manchester Office of Emergency Management Coordinator Arthur Abline and several surrounding fire companies responded to the scene, according to Parker.

The fire remains under investigation but is not considered suspicious at this time, the captain said.

Mcgrath was transported to Kimball Medical center for precautionary reasons and will be assisted by the Red Cross for housing as the dwelling is no longer habitable, Parker said.
