MANCHESTER, NJ — A woman was hospitalized with critical injuries after she was hit by a car while walking her dog in the Fox Hollow section of Whiting on Friday afternoon, Manchester police said.

Martha J. Mosley, 77, of Whiting, was flown to Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune after the incident at Tuckerton and Pershing avenues that was reported at 3:51 p.m. Friday, Manchester Capt. Albert Vega said.

Mosley was walking south on Tuckerton Avenue and trying to cross the road with her dog when she was hit by a 2014 Toyota Corolla driven by Karla Carrizales, 45, of Manchester, Vega said.

Police did not say whether the dog was injured.

The preliminary investigation found sun glare was a contributing factor in the crash, he said.

Two Whiting Fire Company volunteer firefighters were at the scene within seconds, the fire company said — one on their way home from work, the other walking with his family — and reported the crash and began assessing the situation, notifying Manchester dispatch that a medevac would be needed.

Good Samaritans also assisted at the scene, the fire company said.

Firefighters and emergency medical technicians from the Manchester Township Division of Emergency Medical Services, paramedics from Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, and the New Jersey State Police South Star air medical helicopter also responded.

Patrolman Conner Yatauro of the Traffic Safety Unit is investigating.
