'Coastal Storm' In Essex County Brings Heavy Rain, Sleet, Wind Gusts Tuesday

With a nor'easter to the north, a "significant coastal storm" will lash Essex County with wind, rain, and a little snow Tuesday.

ESSEX COUNTY, NJ — The National Weather Service has said a "significant coastal storm" will continue to bring heavy rain, sleet, and a little snow to Essex County through Tuesday.

Meanwhile, a nor'easter is impacting the area to the north. (See map here.)

In Maplewood, the town sent a message Monday night saying, "In preparation for the storm, Maplewood Department of Public Works (DPW) crews will be salting, shoveling, and plowing ... Downed wires should always be considered 'live,' and residents should remain at least 30 feet away. Residents who rely on power for medical equipment should notify their local energy provider as well as the South Essex Fire Department (SEFD) non-emergency line prior to the storm."

The forecast for the Essex County area says a half inch of sleet could fall in the area of the Caldwells, followed by up to an inch of snow on Tuesday.

Closer to Maplewood and Newark, the area may get 1-2 inches of rain into Tuesday.

Wind gusts of up to 36 MPH are also expected on Tuesday.

"There is still some uncertainty at this point to the exact track the storm will take and how much cooling occurs after the precipitation begins," the NWS New York Office said. "Shifts in the track of the low will impact snowfall/rainfall amounts." See updates and maps here.
