Primary Election Guide For Maplewood: Where, When To Vote Tuesday

MAPLEWOOD, NJ — Just because there's no presidential primary this year, doesn't mean you should avoid voting on Primary Election Day Tuesday (or sooner) in New Jersey. Then, come back to this story after 8 p.m. to see the numbers as they come in.

In a primary, candidates vie to be the nominee for their party. Then they face the opposing party in November, and independents can also enter the race.

Several local races are contested in the primary.

These races could help determine how local government will spend your tax dollars, and which programs it offers your town.

Here are some local races to pay attention to on Tuesday.

State Assembly (2 seats):

28th Dist. (Essex/Union):

  • Frank McGehee from Maplewood, Garnet Hall from Maplewood, and Cleopatra Tucker from Newark are all running to be the two Democratic nominees to face Republicans in November.
  • Republican opposition: Joy Freeman and Willie Jetti from Newark are uncontested in the primary

Maplewood (Essex) (2 Township Committee seats):

Committeeman Vic DeLuca (D) is up for re-election Nov. 7.

Mayor Dean Dafis is up for re-election to Township Committee Nov. 7. (D)

While they don't face opposition in the primary, voters sometimes turn out to show support, and political observers look to see who's strong heading into November. They may face opponents in the General Election.
