Salsa Demonstration Heats Up Community Garden

Residents from JESPY House learn how to make salsa from fresh vegetables.

Residents from JESPY House who have been maintaining two plots at the were recently treated to a salsa-making demonstration from local resident Gareth Jones. The volunteers have been working in the garden under the supervision of garden coordinator Irene Dunsavage. 

Jones, assisted by his wife, Liz, made salsas representing the flavors of India, Mexico and Greece. The JESPY residents got to sample the salsas and brought back the finished products to the house to share with other residents.

Maplewood's Deputy Mayor Kathy Leventhal also took part in the event. The residents have been visiting the site on Mondays and Thursdays to harvest produce for local food pantries.

The garden is being funded by the monthly . The Elks Garden is a first gardening venture for the Rent Party, which raises funds for food pantries at its monthly music event at the Elks Lodge.

Another cooking demonstration is planned in three weeks.
