First Marlboro Police Chief Joseph Walker Dies
Walker and early members of the MTPD operated with no police station and with radio communications based in his home.
Marlboro's first police chief, Joseph Walker, died on Saturday.
Walker served as a chief and a member of Marlboro Fire Company, District #1. He became Marlboro's chief in 1968, when Walker was assigned Badge #1 in Marlboro Township.
Walker and early members of Marlboro's Police Department operated with no police station, according to the Marlboro Police Department website. Radio communications were stationed out of Chief Walker's home.
In 1979, new municipal offices and a station were constructed, and the station remains named after Walker today.
Walker retired in 1995, after founding Marlboro's Police Explorer's Program and serving as president of the Monmouth County Chiefs of Police Association and the New Jersey Association of Chiefs of Police.
In 2009, when Marlboro Police Department was named after Walker, Mayor Jon Hornik named May 16 Chief Joseph Walker Day in the township.
