Rabid Fox, Raccoon Found In Colts Neck

The animals were found in the Township's brush and leaf collection zones and tested positive for rabies, officials said.

COLTS NECK, NJ — A rabid fox and raccoon were found in Colts Neck, authorities said Thursday afternoon.

The Township's animal control service provider, Associated Humane, responded to calls involving the animals after the pair were found in the Township's brush and leaf collection zones.

Both animals were captured and tested positive for rabies, officials said.

Colts Neck Township is advising residents of the following:

  • Do not interact with wildlife under any circumstances. If you come across a sick or injured animal, keep your distance and avoid all contact. Call Animal Control immediately or contact the Colts Neck Police Department if it's after business hours or on a weekend.
  • Make sure all domestic animals (dogs, cats and livestock) are up to date with current rabies vaccination shots.
  • Do not let pets run free off leash, even in the woods, to ensure they do not come in contact with wildlife that may be rabid.
  • Rabies is a fatal disease. The best course of defense is to vaccinate your pets and livestock and to not handle or interact with wildlife.
  • If you are bitten or exposed to the blood/saliva of an animal, contact your physician immediately. Contact your veterinarian if your pet was exposed to wildlife, even if previously vaccinated.
  • All dogs must be licensed in Colts Neck Township. To obtain a license, residents can go to the Township website or visit Town Hall.
