Cooling Station Opens In Marlboro As Storm Cleanup, Power Restoration Continues
Residents who need to charge cellphones, medical equipment or other devices can do so at the cooling center.
MARLBORO, NJ — Marlboro Township has opened a cooling center for residents affected by the ongoing power outages following Thursday's thunderstorms.
Marlboro Mayor Jon Hornik said the township's Recreation Center, at 1996 Recreation Way off Wyncrest Road is open for residents who need to cool off or who need to charge cell phones, laptops, and medical devices, among other items.
"Please bring your own chargers," Hornik wrote in a message shared on the town's Facebook page.

The storm, which Hornik described as "brief and severe," took down trees, power lines and utility poles. More than 7,500 homes and businesses were without power at one point. By 2:30 p.m. Friday more than half of those had been restored.
The remaining 3,500 homes and businesses are anticipated to have power back by Saturday night, according to computer estimates from Jersey Central Power & Light.

Road closures remain in place, including Route 79, due to traffic signals being out at multiple intersections.
Hornik urged any resident who has not reported their power outage to JCP&L to do so by calling 888-LIGHTSS. Outages also can be reported on the FirstEnergy website. "If you opt-in during the call, they will text or call you to give estimated times of restoration for your address," Hornik said.
He reminded residents to not call Marlboro Township police seeking updates on when power will be restored.
"They do not have access to that information and it is vital that their lines remain open for emergencies," Hornik said.
The following roads remained closed Friday afternoon:
- Route 79 between Route 520 & School Road West
- Amboy Road & Tennent Road
- Route 520 between Crine Road & Emerald Drive
- Robertsville Road between Palomino Way & Cross Ridge Circle
- Pleasant Valley Road between Beaver Hill to Reids Hill Road

Jersey Central Power & Light's outage website did not have an estimate of when power would be restored.
