MATAWAN, NJ — Monmouth County announced Jan. 22 that the North Jersey Transportation Planning Authority approved funding for several major roadwork projects in the county. They include:

  • $107.5 million for the construction of a new Rumson-Sea Bright Bridge, which is on track to be completed this year.
  • Replacement of the Old Bridge-Matawan Road Bridge (Rt. 516) as it crosses Lake Lefferts.
  • Replacing the Corlies Avenue Bridge that runs between Allenhurst and Ocean Twp.

The two bridge-replacement projects (Old Bridge-Matawan Road, Corlies Avenue) are currently in the preliminary engineering phase. A construction date for both is very far off.

This is the bridge that brings Rt. 516 across Lake Lefferts in Old Bridge Township, Matawan borough and Aberdeen Township. The current bridge is narrow and does not have sidewalks or bicycle facilities. Portions of the steel grid deck are broken and the concrete is deteriorating. There is significant rust on the steel beams under the deck and the wood supports show signs of deterioration. Learn more about the bridge replacement project here: https://old-bridge-matawan-roa...

Monmouth County works with the North Jersey Transportation Planning Authority (NJTPA) on the region’s long-range transportation plan. Every year, the NJTPA works with local towns and state agencies to dole out more than $3 billion in federal and state transportation money.

"Working with the NJTPA, Monmouth County has secured hundreds of millions of dollars to replace bridges in poor condition, construct safety improvements on our roads, and conduct planning work to improve mobility and identify barriers to travel," said Monmouth County Commissioner Thomas Arnone, who represents Monmouth County on the NJTPA Board of Trustees.
