South Amboy Ferry Service To NYC Begins This Monday

Get ready: The first ferry will leave at 5:45 a.m., and then every hour: 6:45 a.m., 7:45 a.m. and 8:45 a.m. The trip to NYC is about 1 hour.

SOUTH AMBOY, NJ — Here's a reminder that the ferry service from South Amboy direct to New York City will kick off this Monday, Oct. 30.

NY Waterway is running the service.

They confirmed this week that the first ferry is scheduled to leave at 5:45 a.m. this Monday, and then every hour: 6:45 a.m., 7:45 a.m. and 8:45 a.m.

The ferry ride into Manhattan is just under 1 hour.

The last ferry home in the evenings gets back to South Amboy at 7:25 p.m.

Ferries depart from the South Amboy Ferry Terminal, 100 Radford Ferry Road, South Amboy, NJ. There is free parking there and a parking lot. Fares are one-way adult: $18, one-way senior: $17, 10-trip: $165, 40-trip: $600 and monthly $588. For comparison, a 40-trip ticket from Belford to NYC by Seastreak is $720.

The ferries will drop people off at Downtown (Brookfield Place) and Midtown (W/39th St.) NY Waterway provides free shuttles from the South Amboy train station and once people get into Manhattan. There are also free transfers to Weehawken, Hoboken and Jersey City.

Available onboard for purchase: coffee, tea & light refreshments.

"(The ferries) will help meet commuter demand between Central New Jersey and New York City and strengthen the area’s economy," said Congressman Pallone this week.

There will be a ribbon cutting at 11 a.m., attended by many dignitaries from the area: Congressman Frank Pallone, Jr. (D-NJ), NJ Assembly Speaker Craig Coughlin, state Senator Joseph Vitale, Assemblywoman Yvonne Lopez, all of whom represent the Woodbridge area, South Amboy Mayor Fred Henry and NY Waterway President & CEO Armand Pohan.

Pallone secured federal funding from the Federal Transit Administration and wrote a letter in support of an application South Amboy made to the U.S. federal Passenger Ferry Grant Program; the city of South Amboy was awarded $5.3 million.
