5-Year-Old Hospitalized With Serious Injuries In North Jersey Crash

The crash involving a Hyundai SUV and a Toyota SUV happened on Monday afternoon on Route 23 in Sussex Borough.

SUSSEX BOROUGH, NJ — A 5-year-old girl was hospitalized with serious injuries after a two-vehicle crash on Route 23 Monday afternoon, according to police.

According to New Jersey State Police spokesperson Sgt. Charles Marchan, troopers responded around 3:30 p.m. to a two-vehicle crash on State Route 23 North near milepost 40 in Sussex Borough.

Bhaskar Patel, 43, of Budd Lake, was driving a Toyota SUV northbound on the highway and had begun slowing or stopping in traffic when he was rear-ended by a Hyundai SUV driven by Diego Mendez-Dominguez, 29, of Sussex, according to police.

Patel sustained minor injuries, while Mendez-Dominguez was not hurt. A 5-year-old girl, who was riding in the Hyundai, was seriously injured in the crash, Marchan said.

The crash remains under investigation, police said. No further details were available as of Tuesday morning.
