MENDHAM, NJ — It wasn’t an ordinary day when an extraordinary pony showed up to Mendham’s St. John the Baptist Convent in 1992 and ended up staying for 27 years.

His intriguing story “…Not Just An Ordinary Pony,” is galloping out of Amazon's starting gate for its book launch there on Tuesday, Oct. 5.

The book, by Sister Margo Elizabeth Colman, which has previously premiered on other platforms, is “Pony’s” biography of how he - as Colman described - a fascinating “mystical, magical being - was placed here, remaining in our lives for a time.”

"A runaway pony that has escaped its owners, police, a professional rodeo roper and a veterinarian who shot it five times with tranquilizers has found sanctuary with the only humans it trusts - a convent of nuns,” was an extract from a Daily Record article in the book’s Amazon teaser.

From there, Pony settled into a life on the convent’s school property, Colman writing, “When the pony came to us, never could we possibly know what the future would bring and how this little guy would change all our lives.”

“Was it just by chance that he showed up on our property, seemingly appearing out of nowhere?” she asked.

Colman said the first part of the book is a narrative, which includes not only Pony’s story, but the stories of dogs and cats who also lived at the convent and befriended him.

“The embodiment of the essence of a small horse, with a free spirit that transcended the ordinary,” is what she wrote about the whimsical horse.

Pony even had his own quarterly column with the convent called “Pony’s Point of View,” his equine insights published within the book’s second half.

According to her author biography, Colman, who entered the convent in 1991, earned her degrees from Fairleigh Dickinson University and has a background in “music, art and psychology.”

This is Colman’s second book, her first “Sometimes A Star,” based on her journeys to Ireland, Scotland, Wales and Cornwall; and the responses from 20 people she met in Ireland, after asking them “Where do you find God?” and “What sustains you?”
