Arson Investigation Continues 1 Week After Pitney Farm House Fire

Cause behind destructive blaze not yet made public.

MENDHAM TWP., N.J. – The investigation into why an overnight fire destroyed on of Morris County’s oldest pieces of property continues nearly a week later, with authorities keeping answers close to the vest.

Just after 2:30 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 24, a passerby called police to report smoke coming from the main house of the Pitney Farm property on Cold Hill Road in Mendham Township. By the time police and fire personnel arrived, the house was engulfed and subsequently suffered a partial collapse.

The property was built nearly three centuries ago, in 1722.

No one was living in the house at the time of the fire, and the cause of the blaze has not yet been made public. The Morris County Prosecutor’s Office said the investigation is still open and ongoing.

Calls to the County Fire Marshal were not immediately returned.
