Chester Cops Warn Of Costly Mail Scam: See Details

No, unfortunately you did not win a prize.

CHESTER, NJ — The Chester Police Department has issued a warning to residents of a costly scam that is appearing in residents’ mailboxes.

Residents are receiving letters from the “United States Deputy Sheriff’s Association,” titled “City of Chester: Annual Police Outreach and Prize Giveaway.”

According to police, the phony letter tells recipients that they’ve won a prize, and solicits donations for the United States Deputy Sheriff’s Association.

“Please be advised that our department has no affiliation with this organization or any mailings they have sent,” a police statement reads. “We urge residents to disregard the letter and refrain from sending any donations in response.”

This scam warning comes just weeks after another scam was sweeping Morris County towns.

In September, law enforcement warned residents of a phone scam in which the scammers pretended to be the chief of police.

Additionally, the scammers are “spoofing” their caller ID, appearing to be calling from the “Mount Olive Police Department,” or whichever town the recipient is.

“If you’re ever uncertain of who you are communicating with, either online or over the phone, it is best practice to contact the entity through their official website or phone number,” a Mount Olive police statement read. “As a reminder, residents are advised to never share personal information over the phone unless they have verified who they are speaking with.”
