Competitive Video Gaming Launched In Mendham Middle School

The school's new team plays competitive video games including Mario Kart and Rocket League.

MENDHAM, NJ — It’s been years since the days of children running to the arcade after school gets out. Now, students are playing video games in school, competitively, including at Mendham Middle School.

This semester, Mendham Middle School launched its first E-sports team, a ‘sport’ that revolves around competitive video game matches.

On Oct. 14, the team entered the Garden State Esports league, which pits students across the state against each other in video games including Mario Kart, Overwatch, and Rocket League.

Mendham Middle School’s team, led by coach Jonathan Smith, launched in September and has already increased significantly in size. The team would meet twice a week to discuss “strategy and team communication.”

“This is not casual play anymore,” said Smith. “Esports teach students how to operate together, think critically, and communicate as a team.”

According to Garden State Esports, students who participate in esports have shown improved grades and social behaviors. It found that 89 percent of participants report that their teams' academic requirements motivate them to work harder in school.

“Parents have also expressed appreciation for the program’s positive impact,” a school statement read. “While esports are often misunderstood as casual gaming, this team embodies a winning mentality, commitment, and a strong team culture. Research continues to highlight benefits such as improved academic performance, problem-solving, and hand-eye coordination, skills that translate to real-world careers.”

The league’s fall season just ended, and its winter season is approaching. Winter games include Overcooked!, Street Fighter 6, and Chess.
