EPA Holding Meeting On Chester Clean-Up Site

The EPA has a new proposal to continue cleaning up the Combe Fill South Landfill.

CHESTER, NJ — The EPA is holding a meeting on their newest proposal to clean up the Combe Fill South Landfill in Chester Township.

The meting will be held on Wednesday, Aug. 22 at 7 p.m. at the Chester municipal building. A newly discovered contaminant and the plan to clean it up will be discussed.

Officials want to expand the groundwater treatment system, and excavate and remove soil and solid waste materials. This plan will target a deeper layer of groundwater and will address the 1,4 dioxane found at the site.

"While considerable progress has been made in the cleanup of this site, our proposal takes us a step further by addressing a source of the contamination and allowing us to get at more contamination in the deep groundwater,” said EPA Regional Administrator Pete Lopez.

Combe Fill South Landfill was a municipal landfill from the 1940s to 1981. When the company went bankrupt, the landfill was not properly closed. Clean-up efforts began in the early 1990s.
