Mendham resident, Aidan Vollmuth, is currently in the running for the title of Youth Athlete of the Year.

Aidan’s love of cycling began the day he sat on his very first tricycle. From that moment on he wanted to be outside on his bike. Once his training wheels came off it was clear there was no stopping him.

He raced his first bike race at the age of 7 in a discipline called cyclocross, a demanding sport that requires skill and strength. It’s a tough sport to master but he showed natural ability and was determined to improve.

By the time he was in middle school, he had his heart set on becoming a professional cyclist one day. He works exceptionally hard toward that goal and can regularly be seen training on the road in the area.

Last spring Aidan was hit by a car near WMMHS while he was on his bike training for Cycling National Championships. It was an extremely frightening and difficult experience and it was unclear at first what the impact would be on his future as a cyclist.

His recovery was tough and painful. But he fought. Through the pain. Every day. He gave 110% in every therapy session. When he was strong enough to ride outside again his spirit was reignited, his passion for cycling intensified.

Despite physical and emotional difficulties, his progress over the months that followed was remarkable. By November he was selected to race for Team USA in Word Cup races.

Aidan’s perseverance, attitude and athleticism make him the perfect candidate to be named Youth Athlete of the Year. The recipient of the contest will receive a cash prize and appear in an advertising spread in Sports Illustrated.
