During the rescue, the ice gave way beneath the responders, but Chief Raymond Bock remained with the victim, keeping him afloat. As additional rescue teams arrived with slings and ropes, Captain Jeff Jozowski and Firefighter Miguel Pardo crawled out to the victim's location, while Engineer Mike Kunkel operated the rescue tether.

Once the rescue sling was secured around the victim, both Jozowski and the victim were safely pulled to shore, followed by Bock and Pardo, officials said.
