Mendham Mourns Fallen Firefighter, Remembered As A Hero

A celebration of life will be held for the 42-year veteran of the Mendham Fire Department.

MENDHAM, NJ — Mendham officials, first responders, and residents are mourning the loss of a heroic firefighter who served the community for decades.

Benjamin Jenkins Jr., a 42-year veteran of the Mendham Fire Department, died on Sept. 2 at the New Jersey Fireman’s Home in Boonton at the age of 86.

Before serving with the Mendham Fire Department, Jenkins served his country with the United States Navy aboard the USS Intrepid.

The dutiful fireman and military veteran is remembered for loving travel, especially spending time in Florida with his friends and family.

“A devoted father, uncle, and husband throughout his life, he was loyal, loving, and always willing to help friends and family,” his obituary reads. “Ben always opened his home to others, providing meals, a place to stay, guidance, and stability in their times of need.”

Jenkins was buried alongside his predeceased wife, Marjorie, during a private family ceremony.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Nov. 23 from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Mendham Borough Fire House, 24 E Main Street, Mendham.
