The departments are in need of additional volunteers to continue protecting residents across the community.

“There are many important reasons why you may want to consider becoming a volunteer firefighter in the Brookside and Mendham Township areas,” a statement read. “In addition to developing invaluable fire service skills and training, volunteering in your home town fosters deeper connections within the community, the desire to serve and protect, and ultimately, the drive to make a difference wherever you are called to.”

Both departments offer youth programs for high school students interested in becoming firefighters.

See below a list of reason high schoolers may want to consider enrolling in the departments’ youth programs, provided by Mendham fire officials:

  • To help aid the Fire Department in all possible ways.
  • Education in the fundamentals of training; fire protection and fire prevention.
  • Preparedness for a future in fire service and protection.
  • To enrich and build upon character development.
  • To develop and maintain an appreciation for volunteerism and community engagement.
  • Volunteer credentials for high school and college resume building.

The Mendham First Aid Squad is also seeking volunteers and offers a cadet program for teens between 16 and 18 years old.

“Call 911, and the Squad will respond. We are looking for individuals who want to give back to their community and maybe even save a life. Does this sound like you?” a statement read. “In order to continue to provide this free service of emergency care to our community, we are always looking for new volunteers.”

The cadet program teaches youths the ins and outs of emergency technician services, serving as “a great opportunity for high schoolers to connect with their community and get a taste of work in the medical field.”

Individuals over 18 years old can be trained to become full volunteers.
