Student Musician From Chester Honored By Band Teacher

A local eighth-grader has been nominated for the Music Student of the Month (MSOM) program at the Mayo Performing Arts Center.

CHESTER, NJ — A local eighth-grader from Black River Middle School was among the students honored as the Mayo Performing Arts Center Music Students of the month of November for outstanding percussionists.

Calyb Craig was nominated by his band teacher, Kenneth Piascik, and selected by the theater's Education Department for his dedication to and excellence in the performing arts.

Every month, the theater honors a group of students, and those who are honored throughout the season are invited to participate in a recital on stage at the Mayo Performing Arts Center.

Craig joined the Black River Middle School music department in the sixth grade and, according to Piascik, has gone above and beyond to develop the school's program.

According to his nomination note, Craig is not only a member of the full band, but he also participates in the school's honors percussion ensemble, “Encore” jazz ensemble, the theory program, and is a top member of the music level system.

"Where there is music at Black River, you will find Craig close by. One of the great parts of being a teacher is listening to my students talk about their passions in life. This has given me the chance to experience some amazing people and achievements," Piascik said. "Craig cares deeply about our world, other people’s feelings, and improving everyone’s quality of life. He extends this kindness to our community and the members of the band respect and consider him to be a great leader."
