Affordable Housing Project To Be Discussed In Chester

CHESTER, NJ — What’s being called “a necessary next step,” to begin transforming the Glenlora tract into affordable housing, is being taken on Monday, Jan. 19.

That’s when Chester Township Council and Planning Board are hosting a joint Zoom meeting at 7 p.m., to discuss the Planning Board recommendations about the project, determining if it “meets the statutory criteria,” according to the township’s website.

In September, the Township Council unanimously decided that the Planning Board would put together a request for proposal for the former Glenlora nursing home site on Route 24, with the following criteria:

  • Housing should be in the 100 percent "affordable" category
  • It will be solely designated for special needs individuals, potentially for adults with developmental disabilities
  • With historical architecture from the 1870s, that should be a part of the development's plans
  • It should be earmarked "redevelopment," to provide flexibility in choosing the project's developer
  • Ideally, it should be consistent with the township's current zoning

In the coming months, more Planning Board meetings are expected to take place about the project, which the public is invited to attend.
