A slate of 10 candidates are running for three board of education seats
Patch reached out to the ten candidates running for three open Middletown Board of Education seats and asked them questions about themselves and their vision for the community.
The terms of Board President Chris Aveta and members Vincent Brand and John Bennett, Jr. expire this year. Bennett joined the board last year, filling a one-year unexpired term. All incumbents are in the running for their seats.
The seven challengers are: Bob Banta, Richard G. Campbell, Michael Craig, Rocco DelGuercio, Michael A. Donlon, Anastasia Millicker and Michael J. Ostrander, Jr.

Below are responses from candidate Richard Campbell:Can you please provide a brief bio, including how long you’ve lived in Middletown and your ties to the community?
I have been a Middletown resident for over 30 years and am the father of three children who went through the Middletown school system. I have had over 40 years managerial experience with the Equitable Assurance Society My community service includes coaching 10 years of little league baseball, I also coached basketball and soccer as well as having been a big brother for CPC Behavioral Healthcare. My education includes obtaining the CLU designation and CHFC designation from the American College, I have been past president of Middlesex/Somerset Society of CLU, past president of Monmouth/Ocean Society of Financial Service Professionals, and and past president of the Middlesex?Somerset Association of Life Underwriters.
What are your motivations for running for elected office?
My motivations include representing the taxpayers of Middletown in a fair and objective way and helping the children in our community to get the best education possible
What new ideas do you have for Middletown schools?
My new ideas are for better communication between the board and the community as well as evaluating the current spending to reduce or eliminate excessive and unnecessary costs.
What challenges do Middletown schools currently face, and what do you plan to do to address them?
Some of the challenges Middletown Schools face are implementing new technologies and the current divisiveness on the board of education. I would recommend reallocating funds from unnecessary and /or ineffective programs. To help end divisiveness on the board I feel that my leadership experience in various organizations will provide me with the ability to work with the board.
Property taxes are always a concern, especially in New Jersey. How can Middletown control taxes?
To help control property taxes I would recommend close examination of all expenditures and major budgetary outlays.
What accomplishments in your private life translates positively to a position in public office?
I have been past president of three professional organizations over many years and have experience working with difficult people and issues to achieve various goals.t
