High School South Receives ‘Rude Awakening’ Demonstration

Local police, fire and emergency responders demonstrated the deadly effects of drinking and driving during yesterday's 'Rude Awakening' demonstration.

Junior Prom is tonight and all of is ready to kick off Memorial Day Weekend. However, in order to be completely prepared for this weekend’s upcoming celebrations, local police, fire, and emergency responders, demonstrated to students the devastating effects of driving under the influence.

“We purposely try to plan this demonstration before junior prom so that after prom this will still be fresh in their minds,” explained Pat Rinella, Principal at Middletown High School South.

The ‘Rude Awakening’ demonstration took place all day yesterday and involved an indoor and outdoor session. During the indoor session, students heard from parents who lost their children due to drunken driving, police officers who have seen first hand drunk driving accidents and learned about the charges and court process people face when they drink and drive. During the outdoor session students wore “drunk goggles” while driving golf carts, witnessed a role play of a crash involving a drunk driver, and watched two air bag demonstrations.
