SUV Hit Bicyclist In Atlantic Highlands Monday

The bicyclist, who was seriously injured, was airlifted to Jersey Shore University Medical Center.

ATLANTIC HIGHLANDS, NJ — A bicyclist was struck by a car Monday evening in Atlantic Highlands, in an accident that shut down Rt. 36 for hours at the height of rush hour.

The bicyclist, a 45-year-old man whose name was not released, was "significantly" injured, said the Monmouth County Prosecutor, whose office is investigating the crash. He remains hospitalized Tuesday at Jersey Shore University Medical Center.

The collision happened at 5:45 p.m. at Rt. 36 (it is called Memorial Parkway in Atlantic Highlands) and First Avenue. The 41-year-old driver was operating an SUV when he hit the bicyclist. The driver remained at the scene and was not injured. No charges have been filed as of Tuesday afternoon.

Atlantic Highlands Police initially said it was a pedestrian who was hit by a car.

An investigation being led by members of the Atlantic Highlands Police Department, Monmouth County Serious Collision Analysis Response Team (SCART), and the Prosecutor’s Office remains ongoing.
