High Tech Students Named to the 2012 U.S. Physics Team

Kevin Zhou and Eric Schneider of High Technology High School will advance for an opportunity to represent the United States at the 43rd International Physics Olympiad.

While Team USA is preparing to compete in the Summer Olympics in London, an elite group of students will also be testing their limits this summer while representing the United States in the International Physics Olympiad.

Team U.S.A. in the International Physics Olympiad is made up of 20 students from all over the country. Of those 20 students, juniors, Kevin Zhou and Eric Schneider from are listed as participants.

Both Zhou and Schneider were chosen to participate on Team U.S.A. after going through a rigorous exam process that began last January with approximately 3,600 students. However, the grueling exam process to make the team is only the beginning for these students. Now, in order to make the next step, Zhou and Schneider will continue their training with more exams and labs in College Park, Maryland this June.

According to the team’s event schedule, while training at College Park, only five students out of the 20 selected will actual travel and participate in the 43rd International Physics Olympiad in Tallinn/Tartu, Estonia.

Although the competition will be tough, all Team U.S. participants will spend time in College Park, MD and get a “crash-course” in the first two years of university physics. The five traveling members of the U.S. Physics Team will be chosen on June 13. The team will then depart to Estonia on July 15 and return on July 25.
