Keansburg Man Shot By Police Has Now Died; Officer Who Shot Him Named

Willem Roman, 46, of Keansburg, has now been identified as the man who was fatally shot by police on Memorial Day weekend:

KEANSBURG, NJ — Willem Roman, 46, of Keansburg, has now been identified as the man who was fatally shot by police after law enforcement says he approached officers with a chainsaw on May 27, Memorial Day weekend.

Roman's identity was announced Monday by New Jersey Attorney General Matt Platkin.

This was the incident that unfolded at 1:07 p.m. May 27: Keansburg Police officers were dispatched to a home on Seabreeze Way for a welfare check. Officers entered the residence and encountered a man, later identified as Roman, "who possessed numerous weapons and a running chainsaw," said the AG.

Attorney General Platkin said Roman "approached officers with the running chainsaw," causing Patrolman John Swartz to deploy a conductive energy device (a taser). Patrolman Tyler Manges fired his service weapon, striking Roman.

Officers and EMTs rendered medical aid to Roman, who was transported to Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune, where he was at first listed in critical, but stable condition. However, Roman died on June 14.

The investigation is ongoing and no further information is being released at this time.
