He added, "These works are especially important to me because they push the boundaries of what is possible with the mediums while working to communicate a deeper understanding of our subconscious and its relationship to color and memory, while exploring an emotional context we all experience."
As an abstract artist, Griffiths has a wide range of influences, from literary authors such as Toni Morrison, Raymond Carver, and Haruki Murakami, to artists including Andy Warhol, Jasper Johns, Motherwell, and Kandinsky.
Griffiths utilizes paper, wax, and other materials to communicate visually through texture, color, and shadow. His artwork has been displayed in California, New Jersey, New York, Rhode Island, and is in private collections. He is the author of the novella collection This Was Not the Truth & Other Collected Stories.
Ai Campbell works in a variety of media, including painting and collage.
On her website, she says, "Shortly after I moved from Japan in 2005, my mother sent a special gift. The package contained beautiful landscape drawings that my grandfather, an industrial designer, did while serving in World War II. The series of 5 x 7-inch works juxtaposed extraordinary detail with the minimalist use of simple black ink on paper. Because he passed away before I was born, those drawings became a special interaction for me. Having focused on colorful, figurative oil painting since college, I was captivated by the power of simple black lines and the vitality of the empty spaces which seemed to give life to the work."
She said, "His work has taken me to study the use of minimal colors and basic forms such as dots, lines, and gradient ink droppings. I use these elements maximally not only to create forms but also to create a feeling of metamorphosis or the creation of life."
J. Nuñez Gallery is a contemporary art gallery founded by artist Jesús Núñez. It's located at 343 Millburn Ave. See more information about the party and exhibits here.
