“Firefighters effectively utilized a water can to mitigate the immediate danger, while a 1 ¾ inch handline was deployed to extinguish the fire fully. A thermal imaging camera revealed that the fire had extended onto the exterior wood siding and the soffits along the roofline. Dedicated personnel from Engine 5-1 worked diligently with the handline to thoroughly overhaul and extinguish both the grill and the affected siding and soffits. Engine 5-3 was assigned to investigate potential fire extension to the second floor and reported no issues, ensuring the safety of the entire building. The crew then focused on the interior wall of the grill area, opening the wall and ceiling to ensure that no additional flames had spread.”
Fire Chief Robert Echavarria credited the Springfield and Summit fire departments with providing assistance to Millburn. Station coverage was provided by the Irvington, West Orange and Union fire departments.
