Hiker Trapped In 'Quicksand-Like' Mud At South Mountain Reservation In Essex County
She got stuck while hiking with her father and their dog, authorities said. Here's how emergency responders freed her from the muck.
ESSEX COUNTY, NJ — Emergency responders rescued a woman from a “quicksand-like” patch of mud at South Mountain Reservation on Tuesday after she got stuck while hiking with her father and their dog, authorities said.
The rescue took place near a riverbed at the reservation, according to the Millburn Police Department.
Authorities said a 28-year-old woman was hiking with her father and their dog when she became stuck along the riverbank.

Police and fire crews from Millburn used long boards to distribute their weight and safely reach the trapped hiker. Firefighters then worked by hand for nearly 30 minutes to carefully dig her free from the mud.
The Millburn First Aid Squad evaluated the hiker at the scene for possible hypothermia. She didn’t sustain any injuries, authorities said.

The county-maintained reservation is located in Maplewood, Millburn and West Orange, and borders South Orange.
