Before the Winter Recess Break, the Millburn Varsity Girls Fencing Team began their season on Friday, Dec. 20 with an opening meet against Governor Livingston.

Although the Lady Millers lost to the Highlanders, 21-6, Miller Captain and Sabre Squad Leader Dana Leichter started out strong during the first bout of the meet by skillfully beating her Sabre opponent, M. Drobish, 5-1.  Other Sabre fencers who contributed victories during the meet were Junior Rachel Legow and Sophomore Cynthia Goldman, who each won with their bouts with close scores of 5-4. Junior Jordan Hsu fought hard against Highlanders C. Drobish and Yong, but lost both bouts, leaving the Sabre Squad with a final bout count of 3-6.

Unfortunately, Junior Leyla Aytaman lost to Governor Livingston’s Bittner and Yang with bouts of 2-5 and 1-5, as did Junior Josie Brown to Highlander To, 2-5, giving the Foil Squad a final total of 3-6.

Miller Captain and Epee Squad Leader Karen Fich led her squad, but they were unable to hold off the Highlanders.  Although they fought valiantly, the starting lineup of Fich and Junior Jacqueline Zhu finished with a record of 0-3 each, while Senior Shuang Chong ended with a bout of 0-2.
