Millburn School Board Member And Family Doctor From Short Hills Dies

A family doctor from Essex County, who delivered hundreds of babies (maybe you?) at the start of his career in the 1960s, has passed away.

MILLBURN, NJ — A longtime family doctor who raised his family in Short Hills, and served on the Millburn Board of Education, has died at 90.

Dr. John J. "Jack" Qualter, whose family medical practice was in Maplewood, died on Friday two months before his 91st birthday, his obituary says.

Qualter was living in Warren at the time of his death, but raised his family in Short Hills, his obit says. He was born in the Bronx in July of 1932.

Qaulter went to medical school at Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine in St. Louis, Missouri, but after a year, was commissioned to serve in the Air Force. He finished his degree in Philadelphia in 1961.

He started his family medical practice in Maplewood in 1962 and "treated tens of thousands of patients who cherished his compassionate care and light-hearted jokes. Jack enjoyed family medicine because it allowed him to treat a diverse group of people and a variety of illnesses, including delivering hundreds of babies when he began."

He and wife Sally lived in Short Hills for 40 years and raised four children. He served on the Board of Education for two terms in the 1980s, coached local sports, and played piano.
