New Internet Trend Gets Stern Rebuke From Millburn School Official
Millburn's school superintendent is warning parents about a computer-frying "Chromebook social media challenge."
MILLBURN, NJ — Millburn public school students who take part in a computer-frying “Chromebook social media challenge” could end up costing their families some cash, district administrators say.
Superintendent Kathryn Diskin wrote a letter to parents and guardians on Thursday, warning them about a new social media trend that has led to some students intentionally damaging their district-issued Chromebooks.
“This challenge encourages dangerous interactions with Chromebook batteries, causing short circuits that generate smoke and could potentially start a fire,” Diskin said.

“Such actions not only damage the devices, but also put students and others at serious risk of harm,” the superintendent added.
“We strongly encourage you to speak with your child about the dangers of tampering with Chromebook batteries or any other electronic device,” Diskin continued. “Please remind them that district-issued Chromebooks are provided to support their education, and responsible use is required.”

Students are expected to adhere to the district’s Acceptable Use Agreement, which they have explicitly accepted, the superintendent said.
“Those found to have engaged in behaviors that violate this agreement will forfeit their eligibility for a replacement Chromebook through Chromebook insurance and will be responsible for the full replacement cost of the device,” she said.
“Thank you for your attention to this important safety matter,” the superintendent concluded.
