MILLBURN AND ESSEX COUNTY — New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) officials have announced that the ramp from Route 124 westbound/Springfield Avenue to I-78 westbound express will be closed and detoured this week as a drainage improvement project advances in Millburn.

Beginning at 9 a.m. this Monday until 2 p.m., and repeating daily through Friday, NJDOT’s contractor, IEW Construction Group, Inc., is scheduled to close the ramp from Route 124/Springfield Avenue to I-78 westbound express.

This closure will allow the contractor to remove debris from drainage culverts underneath the roadway.

  • Motorists traveling on Route 124/Springfield Avenue westbound wishing to take the ramp to I-78 westbound express will be directed to take the ramp towards Route 24 westbound/Morristown, which comes before the ramp to I-78 westbound express
  • Merge onto I-78 westbound local lanes and keep left
  • Use the left lane to continue on I-78 westbound towards Clinton

This project is part of a larger $6.7 million state-funded maintenance and drainage repair contract to make improvements in various locations in eight counties throughout North Jersey.

Additional daytime ramp closures will be required in the coming months to allow the contractor to remove debris from the work site, and NJDOT will provide advance notice before any additional closures take place.

The precise timing of the work is subject to change due to weather or other factors. Motorists are encouraged to check NJDOT's traffic information website www.511nj.org for real-time travel information, and for NJDOT news follow us on Twitter @NewJerseyDOT or on the NJDOT Facebook page.
