SHORT HILLS, NJ — The Short Hills Avenue Bridge has been closed off for construction since the summer, blocking traffic from Millburn into Springfield and vice versa. The project that was said to be done in January is now slated for April.

According a news update from the Township of Springfield, Administrator John Bussiculo misspoke at last week's Dec. 14 meeting where he said the Short Hills Bridge project would be complete by January.

"The cable work with Verizon has delayed the beginning of the project," the Township wrote. "Construction began on Dec.8, which included bridge demolition and removal work. January is not when the project will be completed, it is when work will begin again after water main installation work is done. Construction of the new bridge will begin at that time. The bridge construction should be completed some time in mid April."

The road construction stretches from Woodstone Ciricle to Forest Drive in Millburn/Springfield.

In the project details on Union County's website, it states that the work will consist of replacing the existing culvert superstructure beneath the roadway and installing a new 3-sided structure. The new water main will be installed beneath the structure.

The project also includes roadway construction, drainage improvements, new sidewalks and concrete curb installations.

Full road closure 24/7 will be necessary in the area to optimize the safety of the work crews and motoring public alike, according to the construction notice.
