Short Hills Cardio-Thoracic Surgeon Dies

John Stephen Madaras Jr. was laid to rest on Monday.

SHORT HILLS, NJ - Obituary provided by the family:

John S. Madaras Jr., M.D., 86, of Short Hills, N.J., and Sanibel, Fla., entered into eternal rest on April 9, 2019. Relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend the visitation at August F. Schmidt Memorial Funeral Home, 139 Westfield Ave., Elizabeth, N.J., on Sunday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m.

The Funeral Mass will be held on Monday, April 15, at 11 a.m. from St. James the Apostle R.C. Church, 45 South Springfield Ave., Springfield, N.J. Interment is at St. Gertrude Cemetery, Colonia, N.J.Dr. Madaras was born in Bayonne, N.J., to John and Cecelia (Higgins) Madaras.

He proudly served his country as a captain in the United States Army and was a proud alum of Xavier High School (NYC), College of the Holy Cross (Mass.), and Weill Cornell School of Medicine (NYC). He practiced medicine with the Thoracic Cardiovascular Surgical Group, where he earned the nickname "Smiling Jack."

He had a zest for life and was a member of Baltusrol Golf Club & Canoe Brook Country Club. He was a sports enthusiast and an amateur ornithologist. While he had passion for photography and traveling, having visited over 125 countries and playing golf on every continent, his real joy was spending time with family, especially the grandchildren.

He was a loving husband to Victoria Papalis Madaras; a devoted father to Jack (Barbara), Tom (Ann), Meg, Beth Anne (David), and Kathleen (Ernest); stepfather to Frank Alansky (Melissa), and brother to Larry (Maggie).He cherished his grandchildren, Claire (James), Carolyn, Johnny, Lindsay, Logan, London, Ryan, (Chloe), Richie, Erin, Stewart, York, Alan, Sara, Emma and Tommy, and his great-granddaughter, Chloe. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Xavier High School, New York City.
