Short Hills School Staff Member Wins ‘Custodian Of Year’ Contest

A popular staff member at Deerfield Elementary School won a national "Custodian of the Year" contest – and the vote was a landslide.

MILLBURN, NJ — A popular staff member in the Millburn Public School District recently won a national “Custodian of the Year” contest – and the vote was a landslide, administrators say.

Dan Davis – the head custodian at Deerfield Elementary School in Short Hills – emerged at the top of the list for the “Custodian of the Year” contest sponsored by Cintas Corporation. This was the 12th year that Cintas has held a contest to honor exceptional school custodians.

Davis was one of 10 finalists from around the country this year and the only one from New Jersey.

According to his profile on the contest website, here’s why Davis made the final cut:

“Dan is admired by students, staff and parents alike. Known for his positive attitude and unwavering commitment, Dan ensures the school remains clean, safe and welcoming every day. His reliability, attention to detail and willingness to go above and beyond make him an invaluable part of the school community. Whether he’s assisting others in times of need or brightening hallways with a friendly smile and a joyful ‘Hello!,’ Dan's impact extends far beyond his custodial duties. His selflessness and dedication truly make him a cornerstone of Deerfield Elementary.”

The Millburn Public School District recently held a special assembly to recognize Davis’ achievement, and “Mr. Dan” got a big cheer from students and staff in celebration.

Davis receives a $10,000 cash prize and the school will receive $5,000 in Cintas products.

“Congratulations to Dan!” district administrators said. “And thanks to all who voted for this most deserving winner – he had the most votes they've ever seen!”
