2 Hurt After School Bus Crash Near Montclair, Verona Border

A car made impact with the center of the bus, causing it to roll onto its side, police said.

ESSEX COUNTY, NJ — Authorities have released more details about a two-vehicle crash involving an overturned school bus near the border of Verona and Montclair.

According to the Verona Police Department, the crash took place at the intersection of Bloomfield and Sunset avenues around 3 p.m. on Monday.

Two adults were on the bus at the time: a driver and an aide. No children were on board, police said.

Emergency responders from both towns responded to the scene.

“It appears that the bus was traveling west on Bloomfield Avenue making a left turn onto Sunset Avenue, when a vehicle traveling eastbound made impact with the center of the bus, causing it to roll onto its side,” Verona Police Chief Christopher Kiernan said.

The driver of the eastbound vehicle was transported to Mountainside Hospital with minor injuries, and the aide from the bus was transported to St Joseph's Hospital with moderate injuries, Kiernan said.

A police investigation continues, the chief said, thanking police, fire and ambulance responders for their “seamless teamwork” during the incident.
