A woman stole a gold chain from a man walking his dog in Montclair, police say. A similar theft took place a few months ago.

MONTCLAIR, NJ — A scamster stole a gold chain from a man walking his dog in Montclair last week, police say.

According to the Montclair Police Department, the theft took place Friday on Harrison Avenue.

The victim said a dark-colored sedan pulled alongside him as he was walking his dog. The vehicle stopped and a woman got out of the back seat, asking if he wanted jewelry – specifically a ring and necklace.

When the dog walker refused, the woman continued her attempt to sell him the jewelry and tried to put the necklace around his neck, removing a necklace that the man was already wearing.

The vehicle left the scene before the victim realized that his necklace was gone, police said.

The stolen necklace was described as a gold chain with an eagle pendant, authorities said.

UPPER MOUNTAIN AVENUE THEFT

A similar theft was reported in June on Upper Mountain Avenue in Montclair.

The victim in that case told police that a black sedan pulled alongside of her while she was walking in the area of the Presby Iris Gardens. A woman in the backseat of the vehicle exited and approached the victim.

The woman reportedly stated, “It’s my birthday and I’m giving gifts to people.” The suspect then proceeded to place a necklace around the victim’s neck, returned to the sedan and fled.

The victim had the necklace appraised by a jeweler who advised her it was a fake. When the victim returned home, she discovered that a 14-karat gold necklace that she had been wearing was no longer on her neck, police said.
