Burglars Knock Over Wine Bottle, Tip Off Montclair Homeowners: Police

The burglars appear to have entered the home through an unsecured rear window, police said.

ESSEX COUNTY, NJ — Three home burglary suspects tried to steal a car in Montclair last weekend, tipping the owners off when they knocked over a wine bottle, authorities say.

According to the Montclair Police Department, officers responded to a home on Union Street around 6 a.m. on Saturday after getting a call about a burglary in progress.

The homeowners said they learned about the burglary when they heard a large wine bottle get knocked over.

Surveillance footage shows three suspects wearing masks and gloves enter the home. One of them had a crowbar in their possession, police said.

Once inside, the suspects located and stole the key fobs for a 2019 Mercedes Benz GLC. The would-be thieves were unable to access the Mercedes as it was secured in the garage and blocked in by another vehicle, authorities said.
