COVID Spread Still ‘Substantial’ In Essex County: See Local Stats

ESSEX COUNTY, NJ — Essex County continues to show a "substantial" spread of the coronavirus, according to the most recent statistics from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

The federal agency recently released an online map that rates counties across the nation according to their levels of COVID-19 transmission. The CDC uses four categories of threat level: low, moderate, substantial and high.

According to the CDC, Essex County had a "substantial" level of community transmission of the virus from July 29 to Aug. 4.

The CDC used the number of new cases per 100,000 people, combined with test positivity rates over the past week, to assign the ratings.

Essex County officials released cumulative COVID-19 totals for each town and city on Aug. 6, noting that their daily report may not match state or municipal totals (here's why). Patch has included the U.S. Census' most recent population estimates for each municipality.
