Gunfire Wounds Woman Outside Montclair Gas Station, Police Arrest Suspect (UPDATED)

Police officers arrived to find a large crowd and blood at the scene – but no victim.

MONTCLAIR, NJ — Gunfire broke out during a fracas outside a gas station in Montclair last week, authorities announced Tuesday.

According to the Montclair Police Department, officers responded to the Shell gas station at 115 Bloomfield Avenue at 11:24 p.m. on Friday after getting a report about a fight with shots fired.

The officers arrived to find a large crowd and blood at the scene – but no victim.

Shortly afterwards, staff at Mountainside Hospital contacted police and said a woman with a gunshot wound arrived at their emergency room. She was treated for a single wound to her left leg, authorities said.

The woman, 22, told police that she was in the parking lot of the gas station when a fight broke out between two men, which didn’t involve her. Soon, she heard a gunshot and immediately felt pain in her leg, authorities said.

A bystander at the scene transported the wounded woman to the hospital, police said.

UPDATE: POLICE ANNOUNCE ARREST

On Wednesday, the Montclair Police Department announced that authorities have arrested a suspect in connection with the shooting.

Marquis Staton, 33, of Montclair, surrendered himself to police on Tuesday evening. Detectives identified him as a suspect and formally charged him earlier that day.

Staton has been charged with Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon, Possession of a Weapon for Unlawful Purpose, and Unlawful Possession of a Weapon. He has been remanded to the Essex County Correctional Facility in Newark pending his initial court appearance.
