Montclair Art Exhibit Spotlights The ‘Unifying Atmosphere’ Of Skate Parks

A skate park is more than just a backdrop for tricks – it's a space of "raw democracy, unscripted performance and silent solidarity."

“David Schlosser is a visual artist based in Essex Fells, New Jersey. Though he initially studied fine art photography and graphic design at Parsons School of Design, he left to explore a career outside the arts. His creative instincts, however, never left him. In early 2024, David returned to his passion, enrolling in courses at the International Center of Photography in New York City. He continues to deepen his practice through workshops with renowned artists including Carol Dragon, Martin Osner, and Gerald Slota. David’s work explores the intersection of photography and alternative processes. His techniques include hand painted photographs, nitro transfers, cyanotypes, and experimental mixed media approaches. He had recently begun submitting his work to galleries and competitions, earning recognition in both local and national arenas. His images have been featured in a range of online and print publications, and he has received awards ranging from honorable mentions to top honors in juried exhibitions.”

The artist provided a statement about the intent of his work:

“In this series, I explore the skate park as more than just a backdrop for tricks and scraped knees — it’s a space of raw democracy, unscripted performance, and silent solidarity. Regardless of background, age, or ability, everyone at the park becomes part of a moving, breathing ecosystem where the only requirement is showing up and trying. Through my lens, I aim to capture the subtle rituals of belonging: the shared glances after a hard fall, the quiet nods of respect, the rhythm of wheels on concrete syncing strangers into something like a community. This body of work is about momentum, yes — but also about pause: the in-between moments where human connection finds its footing. The skate park, in all its chaos and clatter, becomes a rare place of unity.”

The library welcomes inquiries from local artists and arts organizations regarding use of its exhibit space. For more information, contact the Montclair Public Library (973) 744-0500, ext. 2221.
