The Montclair Art Museum (MAM) is thrilled to announce its partnership with the New Jersey Performing Arts Center (NJPAC)’s groundbreaking ArtsRx program. ArtsRx bridges the arts and healthcare, offering creative experiences as a form of therapeutic intervention for mental and physical well-being, through foundational support from RWJBarnabas Health, Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Jersey and Women@NJPAC with additional support from a network of foundation, corporate and individual donors.

As one of the first partners outside of Newark, MAM expands the program’s reach, providing participants ages 18 and older with access to a variety of enriching art programs designed to enhance health and wellness. ArtsRx connects patients with local arts organizations, prescribing creative activities like art classes, workshops, and public programs as part of a holistic approach to health.

“Our hope is that programs like this help people understand that—like exercise and good nutrition—participating in the arts is actually good for your health!” says Aly Maier Lokuta, AVP of Arts & Well-Being at NJPAC. “Just like when you give yourself a pat on the back for drinking a green juice or hitting your 10,000 steps—you can feel proud when you attend a performance at NJPAC or visit the art collection at MAM, knowing you’ve done something beneficial to your health and well-being.”

“This partnership is an incredible opportunity to make art more accessible to our community while promoting its proven health benefits for everyone, but especially for people experiencing chronic illness, isolation, depression,” said Celene Ryan, Assistant Director of Community and Access Programs at MAM. “Studies show that engaging in creative activities can reduce anxiety, improve concentration, and foster a sense of community—key components of overall wellness.”

How ArtsRx Works

Participants are referred to ArtsRx through health and social care networks such as doctors, community health workers, or therapists. These prescriptions grant access to a range of creative opportunities at MAM, including:

  • Drawing and painting classes for adults
  • Workshops and public lectures
  • Private art instruction
  • Family-oriented studio programs
  • General admission to view art exhibitions

The cost of participation is fully covered through ArtsRx, removing financial barriers for those seeking wellness through the arts. NJPAC coordinates directly with participants, ensuring a seamless registration process.

“MAM provides people an opportunity for participants to explore their creativity in a space without judgement. It’s all about play and finding your voice, or maybe expressing yourself in a new way,” Ryan added. “Whether it’s making art in our studios or experiencing one of our gallery exhibitions, in the process some people will find the calm they may need for healing while others will get the spark they have been craving for inspiration. It’s all available through art.”

ArtsRx at MAM: A Holistic Approach to Health

The benefits of creative expression extend beyond individual well-being. MAM’s programs emphasize community building and social connection, offering participants a supportive environment where creativity is celebrated.
