Montclair Has 2 Water Updates For Residents: Hydrant Flushing, Conservation
Montclair is about to start its Fall 2025 hydrant flushing. Here's why it takes place – and another important update from the township.
MONTCLAIR, NJ — Conserve water and get ready for fire hydrant flushing. Those were the two suggestions that Montclair Township officials had for local residents this week.
The Montclair Township Water Bureau released the following updates on Thursday:
FALL HYDRANT FLUSHING

The Montclair Water Bureau will begin its Fall 2025 flushing of fire hydrants on Tuesday, Oct. 14. Flushing will take place on dead-end water mains and streets bordering neighboring towns. Work will occur during daytime hours, Monday through Friday, from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and is expected to last approximately three weeks. Click here to read the full notice.
The program removes sediment buildup in water lines and ensures hydrants are properly tested and maintained for fire protection. Please note:

- Temporary water discoloration and reduced pressure may occur.
- If discoloration happens, run cold water from the lowest floor faucet until clear (usually within 30 minutes).
- Always confirm water runs clear before doing laundry.
STATEWIDE DROUGHT WARNING
The governor of New Jersey and the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection have issued a drought warning due to ongoing dry conditions. We urge residents to conserve water wherever possible, such as reducing lawn watering, fixing leaks, and limiting non-essential water use.
