Montclair Shelter Rescues Mama Dog, Puppies Found ‘Living In Filth’

The animals were living outside, surrounded by garbage and facing plunging temperatures, the Montclair Animal Shelter reported.

MONTCLAIR, NJ — A mother dog and her puppies were recently rescued from “filthy” and dangerous conditions, the Montclair Animal Shelter reported Friday.

Shelter staff shared details of the rescue on social media. They wrote:

“The story is timely as we show you some of the behind the scenes work and the warriors that help homeless animals. We became aware of a mama dog and her puppies living in absolute filth. They were living not only outside but surrounded by garbage and abandoned vehicles. We knew we had to take action immediately. The temperatures were dipping and they were also vulnerable to be taken away from their mom to be sold for a quick dollar. The puppies were easy to grab up and get to safety. The mom, not so much! We initially did not know whether mom was just frightened or feral but she needed to get out of the situation she was living in and her baby's needed her.”

Here's what happened next, the shelter reported:

“The rescue gals went out with a dog trap and spent two days /nights luring her in. Just so you know when all else fails, fried chicken works every time for dogs and cats … they cannot resist and it's what brought momma home! The puppies were rescued on Monday immediately brought to Cameron Animal Hospital for a once over by Dr. Houston. They were bottled fed by Molly, Sarah, Mike. Yasmin Rivera continued the vigil sitting day and night until she could get momma to safety.”

Mom and babies were reunited late Wednesday afternoon, and everyone is “safe and sound,” the shelter said.

“This is a day in the life of animal welfare,” the post concluded. “It truly takes a village. Thank you for your continued support. We could not do this without you.”
