Here's Where NJ Ranked On List Of 'Most, Least Diverse States': 2025 Update
Only a handful of states ranked higher than New Jersey on this year's list.
New Jersey is one of the most diverse states in the nation, a new study says.
Financial information website WalletHub released its 2025 list of “Most & Least Diverse States in America” this week, ranking New Jersey seventh-highest on their chart.
Researchers compared the 50 states across six key categories: socio-economic, cultural, economic, household, religious and political diversity. See the full study and learn more about its methodology here.

“Race and gender are probably the first things that come to mind when people think about diversity, but there’s plenty more that makes this nation diverse,” WalletHub analyst Chip Lupo said.
“The most diverse states have above-average variety when it comes to people’s ages, birthplaces, languages, jobs, family structures and more,” Lupo added. “Moving to a diverse state can be an extremely enriching experience as it exposes you to new ideas and new ways of living.”

Here’s how the numbers broke down for New Jersey:
- 4th – Educational-Attainment Diversity
- 6th – Racial & Ethnic Diversity
- 2nd – Linguistic Diversity
- 21st – Birthplace Diversity
- 31st – Industry Diversity
- 12th – Generational Diversity
- 6th – Household-Size Diversity
- 17th – Religious Diversity
Only six states ranked higher than New Jersey on this year’s list: California (1st), Texas (2nd), New Mexico (3rd), Florida (4th), Nevada (5th) and New York (6th).
