Scamster Swaps Gold Necklace With Fake In Montclair: Police

"It's my birthday and I'm giving gifts to people," a woman told the victim. Here's what happened next, Montclair police said.

MONTCLAIR, NJ — A scamster allegedly stole a woman’s gold necklace during an incident on Upper Mountain Avenue earlier this week, authorities say.

The Montclair Police Department released the following details about the incident, which took place on June 7:

“The complainant reported that while walking in the area of the Presby Iris Gardens, a black sedan pulled alongside of her. A female in the backseat of the vehicle exited and approached the victim. The female suspect reportedly stated, ‘It’s my birthday and I’m giving gifts to people.’ The suspect then proceeded to place a necklace around the victim’s neck, returned to the sedan, and fled. The victim had the necklace appraised by a jeweler who advised her it was a fake. When the victim returned home, she discovered that a 14K gold necklace that she had been wearing was no longer on her neck. She believes the suspect was able to swap necklaces.”

The suspect was described as a woman wearing a black dress, police said.
